Give me a V! Give me an E! Give me and R! Give me an A! Gooooooo, Vera!
We’re guessing that’s a yell chanted by members of the Philadelphia Eagles cheerleading squad, who are shaking their pompoms in new Vera Wang-designed uniforms.
Philadelphia Eagles reports that the fashion notable gave the squad an update from the styles she designed for the cheerleaders in 2003, outfitting the squad in white, black and midnight green itsy-bitsy sports bras, boy shorts, long-sleeved shrugs, leggings, tiny skirts and sparkly black sneakers.
More commonly celebrated for her wedding dresses, Wang needed far less material for these barely there looks (eat a stadium hot dog or drink a beer and the stitches might pop right out), but Christina Weiss Lurie, president of the Eagles Youth Partnership and Eagles Social Responsibility groups, tells the team’s website that the styles are fashion-forward and sporty.
“We feel the uniforms are ideal for the cutting-edge image of the cheerleaders — chic while displaying athleticism,” she says.
The Eagles cheerleaders recently attended New York Fashion Week, promoting the new unis.
“I always embrace the opportunity to work on extensions of my original creations and enjoyed designing new signature pieces for the beautiful and talented cheerleaders to wear this year,” Wang, the first designer to outfit a pro cheerleading team, added.
Beautiful and talented? We can’t argue there. But the cheerleaders better hope it really is always sunny in Philadelphia. When the temps start to dive dramatically in the coming weeks? Expect to see some serious shivering and teeth chattering with those pompom shakes.
